Return to Presence
Like a potter at the wheel, we discover ourselves through touch, rhythm, and the honest mark of our hands. In play, we find the space between intention and improvisation.
The Master's Wisdom
In 16th century Japan, Sen Ri Kyu revolutionized tea ceremony by championing wabi-sabi — the beauty of imperfection. He believed the tea bowl should bear the honest mark of the potter's hands, showing asymmetry, unglazed clay, and the natural imperfections that tell a story.
"A tea bowl is more beautiful when it reveals the hand that made it," he taught. This philosophy transformed tea from luxury spectacle into intimate practice, celebrating the unpredictable, the humble, and the human touch.
The bowl becomes a meditation on mortality, simplicity, and the transient beauty of all things.
Ancient Craft
For centuries, Newar potters of the Kathmandu Valley have honored earth and craft with reverence. Their pottery — raku and earthenware vessels shaped by hand and kiln fire — embodies the same philosophy: beauty through imperfection, presence through creation.
At POUR, we don't make pottery ourselves. Instead, we partner with these master artisans, celebrating their lineage while bringing their vessels into tea ceremony moments. Each bowl is a bridge between two traditions separated by oceans but united in spirit.
Earth, water, fire, hands — the same elements that transform clay transform us in ceremony.
Heritage & Craft
The pottery traditions of Nepal span centuries. The Newar artisans of Kathmandu Valley have preserved techniques and philosophies that mirror the wabi-sabi principles of Sen Ri Kyu, creating vessels that are as spiritual as they are functional.
Handmade vessels shaped on traditional kickwheels for over 500 years
Earth from sacred sources, honored through ceremony before use
Each piece bears the signature of the maker's hands - asymmetry is authenticity
Firing in communal kilns strengthens bonds between artisans and earth
Patience: The wheel teaches that rushing creates chaos
Presence: Every touch leaves an impression; every moment matters
Imperfection: Cracks, uneven glaze, and weight variations tell stories
Stewardship: We borrow these vessels; they are meant to live beyond us
We honor Nepalese potters not as suppliers, but as partners in a living tradition. Each bowl you receive connects you to hands that have shaped earth for generations. By choosing POUR, you support the preservation of ancient craft and the livelihood of artisan communities.
